Hi all! Hello and welcome to the very first “Getting to Know You…” of August for 2016 and boy, do we have a great one lined up for you today! Now… think… have you ever looked at your car and thought ‘well there’s only one way to make this better… it needs a bar’?? Hopefully you’re not thinking flames down the side, Pimp-My-Ride style as we’d love to introduce you to a couple of gents who did just that!! Read on to find out all about John and Aaron from Gin and Bear It…!
The basic bits…
Q. Well hello there! How the devil are you? First thing’s first… who are you and what do you do?
A, Well hello, we are very well indeed thank you. We are John Azzopardi and Aaron Burns and together we make Gin & Bear it! We are a pop up gin bar working from our Morris Minor named Aubrey. We do pop up bars for all occasions but very often weddings.
Q. And how did you get into the mobile-booze businesss?
A. Weirdly, the car came first! Having wanted to buy a classic car for ages we jumped at an opportunity on eBay and did exactly what you should never do – we bought a classic car sight unseen! We were extremely lucky as Aubrey was in incredibly good condition and apart from a lick of paint and a couple of upgrades to the engine he’s been a great find. We did however, feel he needed to pay his way and since he is only a 2 door, we didn’t think Brides would be happy being crushed into the back seats. One day I opened the boot and thought – this would make a great bar, the parcel shelf of a Morris Minor is very distinctive. We chatted about it and Gin & Bear It was born!
Q. What do you enjoy most about being the boss at Gin and Bear It?
A. We get to be a part of some incredible events, highlights in peoples lives and this means we are generally in extremely happy company all the time. Being your own boss is incredible too as when you work hard, it’s you and your business that benefits.
And the fun stuff…
Q. If you could jump on a plane tomorrow… where would you go?
A. Malcesine, Largo Di Garda, Italy! No hesitation and no question. The food, the scene, the people and the booze are all perfection.
Q. It’s Sunday… what’s your all-time favourite thing to be doing?
A. Big fried up breakfast either at home or out with friends. Then off to the pub for an hour or so!
Q. Do you have a TV show you’re currently addicted to? (Not a Goggle-boxer? How about a favourite book right now?)
A. We must admit we are addicted to “The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” take that as you will! Also reading a great first novel by a Brighton writer named Nigel Jay Cooper it’s called “Beat the rain”. I couldn’t recommend it highly enough.
Q. You’re home alone… guilty pleasure song: GO!
A. “I Need a Hero” – Bonnie Tyler.
Q. Which would you rather be: a Care Bear or a unicorn?!
A. Bear always!
Q. Do you have a top tip, hack or any advice for brides and grooms planning their big day?
A. Get someone to run things on the day. It’s easy to get carried away with all of the organising but on the day you want to enjoy yourself. A close friend or family member who can wield a clipboard and keep things on track is good to have in charge so you can relax and enjoy.
Mahoosive thank you to John and Aaron (and Aubrey, of course) for agreeing to let us quiz them and for letting us in on their world! If you think a cheeky little drink on wheels might be the thing for you and your wedding or event then head on over to their site and check them out!
